The road of Galibier is within the collar of Galibier which itself is
located at the heart of the French Alps. It passes through these last
by the means of particularly narrow collars and opens the road towards
the nodes of Galibier whose peaks culminate with a height of almost 2
650 meters. The construction of the road of Galibier such as we know
it today began in the year 1880. Work was completed eleven years later
by the installation of a summit tunnel.
Throughout its existence, it was the subject of various installations.
Within this framework, its route underwent several modifications.
Until 1976, it was imperatively necessary to pass by the tunnel to
reach the node of the collar of Galibier. The year 1976, this is not
definitively possible any more at the following day of the closing of
the tunnel. In order to mitigate this change, the road alignment of
Galibier is again modified. This time, its way crosses the topographic
collar. It should be waited until 2002 so that the tunnel is reopened.
This year, of work of restoration are undertaken and the cars can
again pass there. It should be noted that the bicycles and other
machines with two wheels do not have the right to reach the tunnel and
must imperatively pass by the collar of Galibier.
The road of Galibier ensures the connection between the Savoyard area
of Maurienne and Briançonnais. Throughout its layout are revealed
incredible landscapes. Follow one another of the quite green mountain
pastures, the mountains victims, the covered with snow peaks, the
throats, the mountain villages as well as stoppings. By exploring this

circumvent before climbing the collar of Calibier. Being with a height
from approximately 1 565 meters, this collar is accessible via roads
to the important unevennesses and comprising many tight turns. As
regards the landscapes, the collar of the Telegraph alternates the
naked rocks and the wooded mountains. The collar of Calibier, which
thus inspired the name of the famous road in which we will be
interested, is a site which holds many surprised to the hikers. One
